  • “You’re lucky I was out here,” Tom said, offering a hand to help Brian up.

Still pale, Brian mumbled his thanks. Tom guided him to a nearby ranger station, where he warmed him up with hot chili and a spare jacket. That night sparked their friendship. When Brian returned to Harrisburg, he didn’t forget his rescuer. He gifted Tom a brand-new ATV and invited him to visit. Now, as Tom stood in the Pittsburgh restaurant, waiting for Brian’s wedding to begin, he had no idea a shocking secret was about to unravel.

The restaurant was a sight to behold: soaring ceilings with intricate crown molding, chandeliers casting a soft glow over the Three Rivers view, and tables laden with gourmet dishes. Oliver, who’d grown up in a modest cabin surrounded by trees, gawked at the opulence.

  • “Dad, this place is like a movie!” he said, tugging Tom’s sleeve.

Tom smiled, though he felt out of place. The thumping music and chattering guests were a far cry from the quiet of the forest. They settled at a corner table, away from the lively crowd. Waiters zipped around with trays of sparkling cider, and Tom ordered a glass of apple juice for Oliver and a coffee for himself, trying to ease his nerves. As time ticked by, the buzz in the room grew—Brian and his bride were running late. Oliver started fidgeting, bored, when the music suddenly stopped. Brian appeared on the stage, beaming, his arm around a slender woman in a flowing white dress, her smile radiant.

Tom stood to get a better look, and as a spotlight hit the bride’s face, something clicked. Her features felt hauntingly familiar. His pulse quickened as he stepped closer. “No way,” he whispered. The bride looked exactly like his ex-wife, Sarah, whom he’d believed died in a car crash seven years ago. Oliver ran up, noticing the tears in his dad’s eyes.

  • “Dad, what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” he asked softly.

Tom took a shaky breath and knelt beside his son.

  • “Ollie, that’s your mom,” he said, barely believing it himself.

Oliver’s eyes widened.

  • “But you said she died!”

Tom nodded, memories flooding back. Seven years ago, he’d lived in Erie, working as a mechanic. He was married to Sarah, a woman from a wealthy family who loved the finer things in life. Their love had been real, but her father, a powerful local real estate mogul named Victor Coleman, despised Tom and tried everything to break them apart. Then came the event that shattered Tom’s world.
